Across social media, Folie à Deux has been getting a lot of attention since its first trailer release a week ago. The biggest talking point about the trailer has been this moment: Joker: Folie à Deux is the sequel to Joker (2019), and it's coming out this October, 2024. Unlike Joker (2019), Folie à Deux is said to have music playing a big role throughout the film. Though it is confirmed that the genre is Crime, Drama, Musical, it's unclear at this point whether the director, Todd Phillips, will take us in a traditional musical route, or show us something new. The hope is this will be something more unconventional, as a typical musical would feel uninspired and forgettable. “Alien: Romulus”Director: Fede Álvarez Fede Álvarez has been a director, writer, and producer for films like Don't Breathe, 2016 (Rotten Tomatoes: 88%), Evil Dead, 2013 (Rotten Tomatoes: 63%), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2022 (Rotten Tomatoes: 30%). In the franchise canon, the Romulus story happens between Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and James Cameron's Aliens (1986). With Romulus taking place 20 years after the original story, Fede says that it shouldn't upset the franchise canon. Some are saying the teaser trailer captures the suspense of Ridley Scott's Alien series. fdBut we'll have to see whether that's fairly optimistic, or a touch-in-cheek comparison made far too soon. “Furisoa: A Mad Max Saga”Director: George Miller Another franchise piece, Furiosa is a prequel attempting to bring the Mad Max fiery energy from its predecessor Mad Max Fury Road into a whole new journey.
Anya Taylor-Joy says this about Furiosa, “It’s a story of relentless hope.” She also loved the film's production design, direction, and VFX. Speaking about George Miller, she says he “painted every scene.” “The Watchers”I wanted to throw in an interesting underdog film—from a debut director! Directed by M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
Ishana has helped with additional directing on M. Night's latest Apple TV+ series, Servant, 2019-2023 (Rotten Tomatoes: 90%), and was Second Unit Director on M. Night's movie, Old, 2021 (Rotten Tomatoes: 50%). This being her first directed feature film isn't what makes this interesting, but rather that she's the daughter of a famous filmmaker.
When a parent's child follows their line of work, we can't help but compare or look for similarities. We can only imagine whether she felt any external pressures following her father's footsteps, or if she felt a lot of support because her father being a producer on the film alongside her.
